Speedometer cable length

64bj8 II. I have two speedometer cables. One is from the UK, printed on it, maybe 1000 miles on it. Installed by PO. Don't know if it is good, but will assume it is, being he purchased it new in restoring the car. Hence it only has 1000 miles on it.

2nd one I purchased a year ago when I had my speedometer rebuilt. Purchased the cable from the guy who rebuilt the speedometer. (did not know at that time about the PO installing a new one also.)

Now I'm ready to install the cable.

Here's the question. The PO's one is 54" and the new one is 52". Moss says the one they sell is 51" What is the correct length? Does one inch or 3" make a difference?

I'll assume the new one at 52" is problem free. Also assume, that if a guy rebuilds guages, he would make me the right size cable.

But before installing it, why the different lengths? Should I have concern?

HI AUSMHLY, use the 54" one it will fit without any crimping of the cable.-Fwiw---Keoke

I highly recommend that you contact Margaret at MOMA to discuss these cables before installing one. I had her rebuild and calibrate a speedometer for me, and since I was trying to be extra conscientious, I also bought a new cable from Moss and installed it. The speedometer lasted about 25 miles before jamming.

Margaret will have to give you all the details, but there are defective/incorrect speedo cables out there that damage speedometers. Here's her contact info:

Well ASUMHLY,that is interesting that moss told you their cable was 51" Long I guess they are short changing the customer again. I have in my hand a brand new speedo cable Moss part # 021 366 date coded ;6-9 91 The vendor appears to be"SS White" and it measures 52" ferrule to ferrule which is correct for the BJ8.However,we generally have the cables made up 54" long by Euro Speedometer which as I said produces a smooth intallation no kinks.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
