I am removing my dash and am having trouble with the trip odometer thumb screw. I can't remove the pin that secures the thumb screw to the post. Anyone have the best way to take it out? I have a BJ8.

In my BJ7 the "pin" is actually a tiny screw. The slot may be gunked up with dirt so it seems like a solid pin. Not sure if it's the same for a BJ8, but might be worth scraping around to see if you can find a slot.
I have a 67 BJ8 and had the same problem. I clipped of a finishing nail the same size of the pin and and pressed it in on the pin with plyers. When enough of the pin was exposed I pulled it out. Something like a punch or ice pick will not work. My pin was a hollow tube and the ice pick swelled the pin and did not push it out. The nail needs to close to the same diameter as the pin as possible.

You should be able to get the speedo out without removing the odometer reset shaft or knob (I've done it dozens of times). If the speedo is unmolested, the two-piece shaft is held together with a tiny roll pin. Once on the bench, if necessary, you can use a small nail or similar to drive the pin out.

I agree with Bob and have also extracted the speedometer without first removing the odometer reset. Also, I have seen both pins and small screws used to secure the reset so it would be better to remove the speedometer first to clearly see what you are dealing with.
Assuming you have disconnected the speedometer cable and all electrical connections (panel light, etc.), you should be able to slide the speedometer forward until, when angled downward, the top rear edge of the housing clears the opening sufficiently to allow the unit to be raised, on an angle, completely out of the dash.

Thanks for the advice. I greased the body of the speedo and rotated the top of the gauge to the 4 o'clock position before it would clear the opening and just as I thought it was bending the thumb screw shaft it popped out. I initially tried doing it without lube to know avail.
