Speedo drive [repeat subject]

It seems like whatever happens to one of you ends up happening to me. Anyway, my nice newly rebuilt speedometer sort of seized up internally. I removed it and sent it back to Nissonger who was kind enough to rebuild it again at no charge. It seems the lubricant they use thickens up over time if the unit is not installed and used. Mine st on the shelf for four years before it was put into action.

Anyway, I got it back and tested it to make sure it works (yes, it spins very freely now) and then reinstalled it. Of course, it still does not work.

My theory is that the speedo came very close to seizing up and the stress either snapped the cable or something else. With the cable connected at the tranny end, I tried twisting the inner cable and could not get it to spin. From this, I concluded that the cable was still in one piece.

So now I'm wondering if the drive unit is damages, or if there is something inside the tranny that is ruined. I know that on sprites there is a plastic gear that goes inside the tranny. I'm not sure on the big Healey.

So please share your wisdom with me. What do you think is wrong and on a 3000 MKIII, will I have to remove the tranny tunnel to get at it?

Thanks in advance for your time and thoughts.

Best regards,

Bill

When mine stopped working I found out it was the angle drive. I did pull the tunnle off to replace it but you could probably get to it from under with a bit of patience.

It's metal on the big Healeys. The angle drive is the weak link.
