Yeah, though I think some earlier electronic speedos used a pickup on the transmission output. These days, it might be calculated based on engine speed, gear, etc.; though I don't know for a fact.

There are two parts to speedometer calibration: locating the needle on the shaft properly using the dot below the low speed stop pin, and adjustment of the spring. Locating the needle over the dot sets the zero point, and adjustment of the spring sets the range.
