How does one route the speedo cable from the speedometer to the transmission? does it go through the firewall then down to the tranny?

Yes. IIRC, it exits through one of the holes by the MC, then down. I'd take a photo for you but I can't get to the MGA right now. If no one else comes through with one then I'll get it at some point.
