Speedo Angle Drive

Needing to replace the angle drive on my BJ7. Would appreciate your opinions on the feasability of doing this from under the car. It's REALLY tight quarters. Hate to pull the tunnel...
Also recall hearing some opinions that the angle drive can be eliminated altogether?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure it's doable w/out removing the tunnel cover.

Eliminating it isn't a good idea, as it would put an acute angle on the cable, which would probably then be too short, if it even cleared the tunnel.

Would also appreciate opinions on a source for a good quality drive unit. I have been really disappointed with the quality/durability of the ones sold by VB (local for me) for my MG/TR.
Again, thanks
Bill

I've been running without the angle drive for the last 29 years. I had to cut a hole in the tunnel and run the speedo cable under the floor mat and up above the tunnel to the speedometer. It works fine. I've tried to keep the bends smooth. I've had occasional screeching of the speedometer, but been able to adjust the cable to quiet it down.
You may be able to see the cable in this photo, but it's not obvious. It is parallel to the right-hand spoke of the steering wheel.

If you don't like the quality of the repros they come up on E-bay quite often usually cheaper than the new ones, looks like a tight squeeze with the tunnnel on.
