speaking of alternators

The ammeter on my 69 TR sometimes goes in the discharge direction. It will stay there just long enough for me to wonder if I am going to get back home. Then it will return to the center or charge direction. When it is in the discharge direction, revving the engine makes no difference. As I turn on more items the hand goes further in the discharge direction.
I had the car in the garage once when this happened. I "jiggled" the wires on the alternator a little and the hand went in the c direction. Maybe coincidence?

It acts like a voltage regulator? As always, any advice is appreciated.

Have you considered the conversion to a bigger alternator, such as a Bosch or Delco? The cost of a newly rebuilt Lucas will be as much or more than an upgrade.

I have been considering an upgraded alternator in the future. The present alternator seems to be charging alright most of the time. I am new to the triumphs and am not savy to all of their quirks yet. Is the voltage regulator on my 69 similar to the older American makes? Seems like I remember having a problem similar to this many years ago. (there are a lot of years ago and they seem to run together)

Probably not a coincidence, so if not already done, check the connectors and wires for corrosion for good electrical connection.

Sounds like a physical problem, not really an electrical problem. Try removing all corrosion from the terminals on your alternator, or simply carefully plug and unplug your alternator a number of times.

Seems like in the world of Lucas, if it doesn't work give it a wiggle.
