It sounds like you have an ignition kit???
No there is no particular wire to start with. and the longest wire is for #6

"NEITHER" and you will need a lay out to connect them properly. When I replace, I make my own and do them one at a time to be sure they come out correct. Perhaps some one has a numbered lay out for you to follow

could you please explain what type of "layout" you mean.

It would seem that if the distributer is turning it is turning in a particular direction (whatever it is) so I don't understand "neither", and, if the wires are connected in order of the firing order they should also be in the order that the distributer reaches progressively when it turns.

What is wrong with my interpretation?

Hi Robert,
The distributor is turning counterclock wise.
If you put your engine at the at the upper dead point, than the rotor is at the first spark plug. Then you just follow counterclockwise the firing order.

Hi Robert,
I think the point of confusion (at least for me) is what you are starting from. Do you have wires already mounted in the dizzy cap, or are you installing new wires in a new cap and don't have an old one for reference. A recent thread talked about the 20-til-2 rule. With the #1 cylinder on TDC of the power stroke, the rotor should be pointed to the 2 o'clock position. So your #1 plug wire would go to that point in the cap. Then you follow the firing order around the cap in a counter clockwise rotation. I've added the plug-to-cap map onto Roger's photo below. I don't really know what you're asking when you say "<span style="font-weight: bold">any particular wire to start with on the distributer or is it a matter of starting with the first one that reaches</span>" but I hope I've covered it accidentally.
