Spare Tyre vs 'Inflate & Seal"

Fran and I took our BJ7 for five days of driving/camping last week, and that spare tyre sure takes up a lot of room in the trunk. The one we have also dates back to the last time the car was driven regularly: the early 70s?
I was planning on buying a new tyre for the 48 spoke spare but got wondering about the spray can "inflate & seal" approach. Will they work with tubes? how well? how many cans should a person carry? how long does the 'repair' last? should you also carry a tyre pump?
Guidance appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug

Yes they work very well with tubes.

how many cans should a person carry.?
One large size should be sufficient.

how long does the 'repair' last?
Long enough to get you home and then some.

Should you also carry a tyre pump?
Certainly, one of the small 12volt
electrics works a treat.

Now additionally, if you carry a can of camel tyre patches you can repair a puncture in a tyre on the car at the side of the road.
Further if you carry a spare inner tube too you can forget the spray can inflate and also leave the spare at home.

Just some thoughts-------Keoke-- :driving:

Re: Spare Tyre vs 'Inflate & Seal"

How easy would it be to actually change out a tube on the side of the road? Has anyone had the unfortunate pleasure of doing this? Did you just need a new tube, tire spoon and jack?

It's an intriguing idea. You could have both a tube and inflate & seal can, a 12 volt pump, tire spoon, jack and a few tools, and still use a ton less space than a single spare tire.

Quite simple actually. You see you do not have to remove the tyre from the rim or remove the wheel from the car.

The weight of the car will break the bead for you. and with standard hand tyre irons you can gain access to the tube and patch the puncture,

If the tube experienced a total failure while you were getting to the side of the road you have a new spare tube in the boot. In either case the little air pump will get you back on the road in short order OK

Has anyone had the unfortunate pleasure of doing this?
I'm sure it werent just a dream on my part..

NO!! Additionally, you gotta have that little lectric 12 volt tyre pump too.--Fwiw--Keoke- :driving:

Re: Spare Tyre vs 'Inflate & Seal"

Mounting these by hand was much easier than I expected.

However, being tubeless, I had a 40% failure rate on seating the beads (3/5 seated with my 3hp compressor, the other 2 had to ba done at the local tire shop).

Tube-type tires would eliminate the bead-seating problem__which I am quite sure the 12VDC portable pump couldn't handle (could always do the WD-40 method... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSDPHjo1zRU&NR=1 )

Well seem like you could get around that unfortunate upgrade by just intalling a tube if you will carry one and that little lectric air pump in the boot.--ME--

I'll stick to carrying a spare, and a AAA card

Don't ferget the cell phone.

OH!! my goodness yes!! and we are thankfull for the younger generation too.---Keoke---

Re: Spare Tyre vs 'Inflate & Seal"

Yeah, you're probably right... keep the spare. But it sure is tempting thinking how much boot space I can gain! I'll give it a bit more thought
