There are apparently questions about possibly ignoring some safety recommendations dealing with the engine and propellant systems. But even if true, we must all remember this sort of thing is not yet anywhere near being as safe as airliner travel
as Branson said they wanted. And may never be.
Any time you travel via much more than shoe leather, it has inherent risk. The edge of space is just the latest 'fringe' travel barrier. We'll get there. Due to the high profile of the endeavor, this incident gets hard scrutiny. It won't be like the Hindenberg, We'll see more and better attempts anon.
Hope you are right. In these days of 'health and safety gone mad' (UK) and 'if it moves, litigate' (US) it only takes one failed attempt to get endeavors like this closed down permanently.
You've hit both those nails squarely, Steve. But I've the "cockeyed optimist" attitude when it comes to humans expanding their exploratory endeavors. So far we've (as a species) been unable to sit still in one place for long.
Wilbur and Orville had a lot of opposition in their day, calling them crazy and what does a bicycle shop know about flying? History has answered that statement very well. There is always opposition to every endeavor, but perseverance and hard work usually over comes the road blocks. Aircraft has fallen from the sky ever since the first one was built and will continue doing so until the last. When it falls, you just hope it falls slowly, as in controlled flight! . Private controlled flight and passenger rides into space will happen, regardless of the opposition and it's not that far off! PJ
