Sound systems - and where to put your iPod

Someone tried to steal my stereo the other week, the mongrel. It was one of those flip-over ones that have a plain plastic front when "off" - and they didn't manage to prize it out but they did break it so I'm hoping that Santa will buy me a new one.

I'm going to make sure it has an iPod jack and I've installed a power socket under the glove box ('67 BJ8) to run said device but I was wondering - where shall I put my iPod while I'm driving?

If I leave it on the centre console top, it'll slide off.

Any suggestions?

Bob

There are stereos that will control the iPod from the head unit, so you can hide the iPod somewhere where you don't have to see it and still have full functionality. Built-in+audio+only]Crutchfield has these listed, I imagine there are similar units sold in Australia. I have a Sony X-Plod in my 350Z and really like it.

Hi Bob,

There are products made, generic term...sticky pads, that seems to work. Here's a link to one product being sold on Amazon. Scroll down on that page to read the reviews.

Here's a link to another site that sells one. Check out the youtube video on that link. I'd bet, this pad will hold your ipod, even on a race track!

I wonder if it's better just to avoid the whole receiver set up and just have 12V powered computer speakers (like the Creative T20) which you just put the jack in the iPod headphone jack. This will keep everything hidden and you will only be limited by the battery life of your ipod (unless you keep a charger)

The other option is to get something that looks period, and this thing is interesting with all the add on plates & knobs:

Retro Radio

Faceplate kits

Hmmm....

Bob, what source of music are you looking to have? AM/FM, CD, MP3...8-Track, lol.

If you're happy with just an MP3 player, then Allen's suggestion will work great. The speakers can be mounted under the dash, out of sight. (I mounted four Creative speakers under my dash.) You take the MP3 player with you. No more theft problems.

If you go with computer speakers that have a headphone jack, then you can even plug a Navigation system into it, and be able to hear the directions, vs. not hearing the small speaker in the Nav unit. Plus, some Navigations units have a MP3 player in them like a Garmin Nuvi 660. (That's what I have, most likely there are upgraded unit now.)

Lots of choices.

Cheers,
Roger

Hi Bob,
Maybe something like this? I'm not sure what model iPod you have, there are so many.
Apple Store

Some decent ideas, thanks boys.

I want to play it through the radio - an AM/ FM receiver and the speakers are already in the car. All I need is a mounting unit for the iPod and GregW's link might be the go.

Another shopping trip.....
