Had a good look at the Series-1 90mm Vivitar β±2.5 Macro I've had for 45 years. The fungus is on every element, "spider webs" of the stuff. Started crusin' th' 'net Saturday to see if there was another one and what it would cost. KEH had a couple and the least expensive one was listed as "UG". They also had the 2X magnifying adapter which I'd declined when I got the original lens. That was graded "EX". Ordered both, came today. The 90mm is clean and clear, diaphragm works as it should, a couple minor scratches on the front barrel are the only blems I can see.
What it cost for the two pieces was less than a Benjamin. For me to have opened the original and spent HOURS trying to clean it, I think it was a wise decision. I'll likely do the CLA on the fungus-laden one as an exercise, but won't need to be concerned if it doesn't come out well. And judging by the KEH classification of this replacement, even if the elements clear of the growth it would likely be classed "scrap" just from external appearance!
