TR6 Sound deadening in the boot of a TR6

The following thumbnail shows the 10 inch square deadening material originally in the boot of a TR6. Other then holding in place the round metal plate sealing the hole in the bottom, is it really needed. (I have sealed and riveted the plate to cover the hole)

Does anyone know what the origin of the hole is?

 
Ray - I'd add more. I've be using Hushmat, similar to Dynamat etcc and it makes nice difference.

You'll get a more solid 'feeling' car with covering 1/2 or more of the surface area. After all the time/love/effort you've spent on her the extra $30 is worth it!
 
Not everyone agrees with the use of this stuff but it works great.

I sprayed a heavy chip guard in the spare tire hole and primed it with a high build primer to smooth it over. I also did the floorboards and the deck behind the seats. Car is very quiet. I get may complements about the solid ride. In fact I had a Healey nut said he had a new appreciation of Triumphs after a drive. What ever you can do to muffle the sounds (vibrations) do it. Especially if your using some kind of free flow exhaust. If the sound deading pads are OEM and your looking to be correct do it too.
