Son's first marathon run.

Blake ran the Toronto Marathon yesterday, after only 10-12 weeks training.
Unfortunately it was unusually cold, and he had not trained in that kind of weather, so did not dress warmly enough, no gloves or wool headgear. He ran the first half (13 miles plus) in 1hr. 48 mins, on a pace to finsh in about 3hrs 40 mins, and was feeling strong but cold.
After the hilly section he was tired but recovered ok with water and Clif Shot gels and continued to 18 miles, where he was in pain from his ankle and his leg muscles were burning and he was shivering with cold. He slowed down but kept pushing to 22.5 miles where he stopped and sat on the curb. By this time his fingers were blue under the nails and there was blood on his shirt from his nipples bleeding.
The paramedics wrapped him in blankets and took him to the medical tent for warming up and a leg massage.

He started the race at 170 lbs, and weighed 162lbs when we got home; had 3 salads, large pizza, milkshake and pie for dinner!
So a good first effort, and he is looking forward to the Mississauga Marathon in May.
Thanks to all who read the previous post, and for your encouragement!
Simon.

Am I the only one who cringed at one particular line? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Yeesh!!! Good effort though and it sounds like he will do well next year, with a good lesson learned!

I'm with you, Steve. Yikes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Good work, though. An impressive accomplishment for a first try out.

And that folks is why God gave us wheels.

Quite an effort he put in to do so many miles frozen stiff.Glad no lasting damage has been done and he is still keen to do more marathons. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF

Good show, son-of-Simon!

I *walked* 5 kilometers for a breast cancer event yesterday....that's about my speed these day.

Many moons ago I ran regularly, but never 28 miles.

My lab coorinator here at work is running the Chicago Marathon next week (his girlfriend is running it too). He normally runs about 30 to 40 miles per week, so he should be OK.

Our college president ran the NY City Half-Marathon a few weeks ago...great for a 63 year old guy who was a heavy smoker!

I used to run too, but never could do long distances like that. Quite an accomplishment! (but painful?)

He did a great job, bravo.

Great determination, congratulations.

Wow....You should be very proud....It was dang cold!

Hey, thst's great! That distance is fantastic and his time to 1/2 is great for a runner with his experience.

My training for the half marathon in May goes on- I've given myself 6 months to train. Did 7 1/2 miles Saturday.

On the next one I'm sure he'll come out fine!

Tell him "way to go & not to quit yet!"
