Some observations on float needles and seats. Checking online and in the SU site in the UK, it appears that there are two sizes of float needle seats, .070 and .096. This apparently represents the opening in the valve seat and our Triumphs typically use the .096 opening—I believe.
A notation states that the new solid steel or brass needle with the viton tip is the best—better than the older plastic version with the steel tip.
I just replaced my seats and needles because I couldn’t get the fuel level in the jets correct. It now appears I finally have it. I’m test running and driving now, but I can say that, so far, I see improvement.
The float needles I had were the newer versions from SU, Moss, etc.—solid brass with viton tip. I removed those.
in the course of all of this, I noted something else. There are at least two sizes of the seats lengthwise. One is .8 inches long and the other is .838. I used the .8 seats with the old plastic needles with the spring and steel tip.
Maybe a wild guess, but perhaps by running hot with the gas boiling in the line and bubbling in my fuel filter (something I believe I’ve now addressed with an auxiliary fan) the viton tips of my needles were ruined. Or, maybe they were ruined by old gas sitting in the car for months while I hadn’t driven it. Whatever the case, those viton needles apparently were not working correctly. The fix after replacing them was immediate.
I’m curious whether there’s a source anywhere making the old style steel headed float needle with the plastic housing and little button spring on the bottom. I’d also be curious if anyone knows why there are two lengths for the valve seats, or if any other recent issue has surfaced in any anyone else’s experience.
Thanks guys—-
