First of all I'd like to thank Chris from Spridget-tech for helping me with my exhaust problem, I was able to install the new (correct) pipe and have taken 3 short trips with no problems so I think I am good to go on that.

ok, the question is in regard to the reverse switch. When I first got the car, I noticed the reverse ligts did not work and saw the bulbs had completely burned out. So I ordered new bulbs, but when I put them in, I still get no reverse lights. I tested the circuit - at the bulb - and I'm not getting any current so I'm thinking it could be the reverse switch. I lifted off the cover that is on the shifter and I see what I think might be the switch , but I want to be sure before I start pulling stuff apart.

Assuming that is the switch, any steps I should take to test or fix it or am I just better off replacing the unit.

Also, it seems to be a strange size, 9/16 is too small and 5/8 seems to strip it..

Try your metric wrenches /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
My guess: 15 mm.
If you have an ohm meter you could connect to the wires and see if it opens and closes when you put it in & out of reverse. (ignition off of course)
 
That is a Whitworth / BS size (British Standard) The 15 mm fits.
Switch doesn't look too good on the outside, but it's the electrical that counts. Check for power on one of the switch wires when the ignition switch is turned on, and on the other of the switch wires when in reverse.
 
Glad the pipe worked out for you. How did your muffler fit? For the reverse switch do as others have said and check continuity at the switch first. If you post your VIN we can look at the proper wiring diagram to diagnose further. If you have small things left but want to get it inspected I know a place about 20 minutes from where you have it garaged that might not notice.
 
The muffler fit right on no problem, if it wasn't for the non stop rain, it would have been an pretty easy job /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

so I bypassed the switch and the lights worked. Didn't have a 15mm wrench around to pull it out, but based in the drawings and a photo from ebay I'm thinking this thing is pretty solid and not worth me trying to pull apart to fix, I just order a replacement and be done with it, then I think I will be inspection ready!
