I have a friend that will be embarking on a 6,000 mile motorcycle journey through Canada, then on to Newfoundland. He is asking some of his friends for help in "Must See" places to stop and see.
I'm hoping some of the BCF members can offer some assistance.
Any and all help is welcome! Thanks for your input
Below is the email he sent out to his friends asking for suggestions:

"As you can imagine i have tired of planning my site seeing stops on my trip to Canada and am hoping i can get a mix of things i might not have done by asking for each of you to pick a place to visit on my trek. Plan is to go into Canada via Montreal then thru Old Quebec, north to Labrador City. East in the Trans Labrador Hwy to the ferry into Newfoundland then will go east to St Johns after a few days on the Western Coast. I will then take the ferry to Sydney Nova Scotia and do the Cabot Trail then go to Halifax and do the Evangeline Trail and head home via the Coast of Maine and around 95 though i hope to take some side roads rather than hwy.
Would love some help with must sees in the eyes of everyone else."

Elliot - unless I'm missing something, isn't he just going from Maine into eastern Canada, then back to Maine? Can't see where the 6000 miles comes from.

Anyway, I'd sure spend time on Prince Edward Island, then north in Newfoundland to see Anse aux Meadows (old Viking village). There's also a massive meteor crater up there. Then be sure to see Chute Montmorency, Magog, Laurentide Parks, Nipissing, etc. Sounds like he won't be going toward Toronto, altho' there's lots to see and do there, as J-P will point out. I don't think there's a boring place anywhere in Nova Scotia: scenery, history, Louisbourg, Cap Breton, Cabot Trail, etc etc.

Just some thoughts.

I would chime in but I'm way out west, have never been that far east within Canada but it sounds like he's on the right track, definitely lots of excellent scenery to see in Newfoundland, I do know there is a beautiful national park on that west coast of Newfoundland...

Thanks guys

As a former resident of PEI and being a married to a Nova Scotia girl from North Sydney I would concur. However he might want head down the coast of Nova Scotia and visit Halifax and Lunenburg and then take the Ferry from Yarmouth to Portland ME or the Digby to St John Ferry to cut of some time and driving. PEI in the summer is the best. Lobster, white sandy beaches and warm gulf stream influenced waters.

Hopefully this thread has answered Elliot's question and I can steal it.
My little gal is probably moving to Vancouver BC this summer to begin her career.
Can some of you "northies" fill me in to your tax situation as it pertains to a paycheck...how much in tax and how much in medicine or is it combined.
Really I have no idea
AND PLEASE NO POLITICS

Forget the taxes, she'll give most of it to Tim Hortons.

1. Re the Newfoundland trip, I would consider driving on the North Shore Montreal to Quebec City. There are more villages but, the southshore is just straight interstae type highway while the north winds.

2. Spend time in the old city of Quebec. That is the most interesting. Our very favourite restaurant is call Casse Crepe Breton . Not expensive and just fun to be at.

3. Sounds like he is going north along the Gaspe to get to Labrador etc, I have never driven that way but it looks lovely.

4. When in Cape Breton consider going to Louisburg . It is kind of a French Colonial Williamsburg - pretty neat.

5. In PEI the college of piping in Summerside had concerts all summer long

6. This added to all above. And in New Brunswick especially watch for deer and moose. BTW moose eyes do not reflect light like deer eyes.

have fun!

Don't think so Elliot...Vancouver is a progressive coffee town ala Seattle.
She a bit of a coffee snob.
Wonder where she gets it from?

In terms of British Columbia, here are the tax rates,

https://www.taxtips.ca/taxrates/bc.htm

the second chart is the combined - provincial and federal.

sales tax is 12%

medical should be included though you will have to apply for it when she moves and will receive a health card.

not a lot of difference USA vs Canada but, things like mortgage interest are not deductable

btw health insurance covers basic, so, her work may provide additional for things like dental and prescriptions etc.

and tax is deducted at source

JP, she's already applied for the work visa and has been approved.
For medical they won't even let her in unless she already has insurance.
I guess you aren't covered for the first 6 months or so
Car insurance too.
Thanks, hopefully I understand it

Thanks for the great suggestions JP. I'll pass them on to my friend.
