So Tom,
I see on your blog the proposed route for your proposed trip goes well south of Albuquerque! You do know, don't you, that you could follow old Rt66 right through my back yard? Harumph!
 
Hey - Glad someone read my blog! I was hoping to hear from BCF folks along the way.

Route 66 - That road has quite some history. When I was a kid we used 66 on many of our family trips - in the 1956 Rambler station wagon. New Mexico is one beautiful place. I was there just ... 35 years ago.

Three things helped guide me in making that route:

1. Places where my former colleagues and students live. (I've kept in contact with many of them, all the way back to 1970.)

2. The National Geographic book "Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways".

3. Jensen's "Road Trip USA".

Well what do they know! You need to pass through ABQ! Why? Because I live here dude!! Heck, even make a side trip to Santa Fe and Taos via Madrid on the Turquois Highway! Then head west on I-40 (parallels rt66) through Arizona and the painted desert, the petrified forest and the "Meteor Crator" and of course Grand Canyon!

Well, as a matter of fact that was my last year in Engineering school at UNM in Albuquerque, but then left for all points far and wide ater OTS and made it back to New Mexico in 92.
 
Taos, and Angel Fire, are two SPECTACULAR places!! My wife and I looked for jobs there many moons ago so we could move there. Did not come to pass...... :frown:
 
Got kicked out of the G. Canyon with my soon to be wife on that trip.
Saw a Kick a$$ thunderstorm in Albuquerque

My brother lives in Tucson. Haven't seen him since 1987.

You mean besides me?

Well, you could:

Visit Georgia O'Keefe museum (This is one of the places Paul McCartney visited the day I was driving right behind him on I-40)

Ride the Sandia Crest Tram

Visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center

A little off the beaten trail, is Taos Pueblo

Then, heading west from Albuquerque you will pass through many Indian reservations. Not much to visit between there and the Arizona Boarder but lots of beautiful scenery. Once in AZ:

Visit The Petrified Forrest

The Painted Desert

Visit Meteor Crater

And if you head to Flagstaff and then south from there you will see some of the most spectacular scenery in the USA! You can also take some extremely beautiful state roads that will take you from Winslow to Tucson! (You'd want to take a route that takes you from Winslow to Payson, AZ then on to Tucson.
 
And, visit with me. Our east boundary is Whiskey Hill which was originally Rt. 66. They simply blocked it off, straightened the road and it is the "new" section of the Mother Road. They did this to stop the rum runners as the original road made it easy for them to out run the police.
