We had a fun day wandering around in the Ophir Hill mine that is privately owned, That had been open from the late 1800's till around 1975.
Its quite a different experience.
There are more pics here if any of you would like to look.

Is that water in the last pic? I've always wanted to go spelunking, but I think I'm a bit to chicken to really go "exploring".
Looks like fun.
~edit~
From the Flickr page, What was the date on the newspaper?

We have an old gold mine on our property in Butte County, CA. We let the entrance cave in and seal it off to avoid liability. When it was open, it was a real trip to go into, until you got to the place where the rotting timbers were the only thing holding the roof up. The guys that dug and mined the ore had to be some real hard cases because at the time it truly was out in the middle of nowhere.

This mine is heavily locked, So people cant enter, There are a few groups here in Utah that are trying to seal up mines legally or illegally, The group that led us was https://www.mojaveunderground.com, Yes there were parts where we were told "do NOT touch the bracing or wood structure" You can see a few photos of the semi caved in areas.

You look so serious in that pic Brian... Lighten up.. ya know, just whistle while you work! hehehehehehehehe.
