Smokin' BJ8

So there I was: top down...cruisin' at about 70...my new motor is running OK (a little lean)...oil pressure is up there...engine temp. is low...all is well...
I come to some traffic and stop and she starts to smoke!
Seems to be comming from the left side pipe. White smoke, not blue. No stumble in the idle.
I drive a little farther and the smoking stops!
I think I remember a disscusion here about the brake booster failing and sucking brake fluid into the manifold. I searched but can't find the thread.
I'm also wondering if a carburator float is sticking, but the idle doesn't change.
I'll sit with the manual tomorrow morning and see what I can figure out, but I thought I would run it past the good folks in the forum first.
Anybody got a suggestion? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

MH67, If the smoke is "WHITE" the brake booster is the first thing I would suspect.Disconect the Vac line to the booster and plug it off at the Manifold and the end of the hose.Drive the car a bit and see if the smoking stops. Take care now she will be harder to stop.---Fwiw---Keoke

i must be missing something here, plugging up the lines sounds good, but driveing it with impaired braking?why not just let it run standing still? your going to be hanging around looking for the results of pluging the lines anyway,so you can easily watch out for all the engine parameters-temp,oil press etc.or is there a need for having the car moving?thanks.

Keoke-
I will try that.
The thing that has me wondering, though, is that it only seems to happen after a long run (10 miles?)at speed. I notice the smoke when I slow down to a crawl.
If I park the car for a while and restart it, the smoke is gone.

Yes, there is a need to have the car moving to simulate the dynamic conditions he experienced with the car-but with the potential source of the white smoke removed. Could be sumpin else---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, Keoke, I've removed and plugged the vacuum line and she's still smoking from the left side pipe after a quick run. In the mean time, I've also installed rebuilt carbs (unrelated). So now I'm thinking maybe I've got a head gasket problem. Maybe the head is lifting when I give it some RPM...?
The motor is fairly new...less than 1000 miles. Can I re-torque a copper gasket?
Anyone out there had head gasket problems?

Well lets see MH67. If the engine has at least 200 miles on it and has not been retorqued following the Gasket's initial replacement it is the usual practice to retorque the Copper Gasket. In this case it just might be beneficial to go ahead and try a head retorgue. However, did you check the oil for any water content or look in the radiator for oil content. Sure hope it can be sorted out without too much trouble.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The new carbs got me thinking. I know this is a long shot. But, when I first got my BJ8 I got white smoke from over-filling the dashpots.

Good luck,
Walter

Well, I pulled the rockers and retorqued the head. Almost no movement in the head bolts so, I'm guessing, that wasn't the problem. I pulled the plugs and found that they all looked the same except for the number 1 and number 2 cylinders. Number 1 is much more black and number 2 is white. I'm still a bit worried about the head gasket.
No water in the oil. No oil in the water.
Walter- I'm hoping you're right, though. I did overfill the carbs. Maybe after a long run at high vacuum the carb is sucking oil into the manifold?
I'll put it back together and check that next.
Thank-you gentlemen.

Well MH67 keep us posted on you findings.---Keoke
