Smog Pumps... the Op check...

Operational check... I recently passed my California emissions test, barely. When I passed I had to 'de-tune' the car quite a bit. The only check I did in attempt to check the smog pump was verify the pulley spun freely. However, something about it bugs me and I'd like to make sure it isn't just my system. My smog pump emits a burbling/gurgling type sound while the engine is running. The OEM inlet and filter was replaced with some generic type inlet (maybe this contributes to the noise?). With the engine running and the all of the plumbing hooked up, I can feel a pulsing suck action (in sync with the burble/gurgle) when I cover the inlet with my hand. Also when I completely cover the inlet the noise in the engine compartment is reduced significantly.

I suspect the proper method for op checking the smog pump is to disconnect all of the plumbing and verify that it still sucks air in through the inlet and blows out through the plumbing connections. However, even if my pump does check out to be 'good', I'd like to know if it's 'normal' for the smog pumps to be noisy. Smog pump users... what's your experience with these devices?

hmmmm... no comments on the noise levels of a properly functioning smog pump? I realize a large portion of you folks don't have to keep them and as a result remove them, but I know there are a couple California drivers hiding in the crowd... What's you guys' experience with the noise levels/type of noise coming from your smog pump? Is it anything like mine?

Yours sounds about the same as mine. It sucks and blows air out of it and makes some interesting gurguling noises and some bearing noise. Mine does have the stock filter on it.
