slipping out of gear

Hi all. It's been awhile since I was on here. I didn't get much chance to drive my 76 B last year so I was looking forward to this year, maybe even a trip to the grand canyon when:
I was driving home,(small town) from the bigger town when at the last stop the car jumped out of gear upon take-off. When engaging in any gear I can get it to go several feet then the gear slips out, (in all gears including reverse) and make a whizzing grinding kind of noise. A sound like when a starter doesn't fully engage. The fluids are up and there is good pressure on the cluth pedal. It shifts into the gears easily.
Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

I will take a stab in the dark on this one. Any chance the rear flange is loose letting all the gears on the main shaft move back and forth? If thats not it I can not think of anything that can be repaired without removing the trans. Good luck and let us know what you find. Bob

You can pull the side cover off the transmission and check the shifter forks and selector fork to make sure their tight on the shafts. A loose fork can cause this. If loose, tighten the locking bolt. Just another avenue to pursue without pulling the tranny. PJ

It's weird that this is in all gears. Often, if it pops out of gear and into neutral, it's a bad synchronizer (but that's usually only in one gear).

When you say it is "slipping" out of gear: is it actually popping into neutral?
Or is the gear lever still in the intended gear position when you hear the noise?

If the shifter isn't jumping into the neutral, then Bob's guess is about the only thing I can think of too.

If it is popping into neutral, it could be a fork or synronizer problem. Generally this means the trans must come out for a proper inspection.

I agree Nial, probably best thing is to put the tranny on a bench and check it out proper. Popping out in all gears, including reverse, doesn't sound like a quick fix. JMHO. PJ

Sorry to take so long to get back on here. I had some out of town stuff to do. The shifter is staying in its proper position and not popping into neutral. It is defenately happening in forward and reverse gears. The flange was tight. Tomorrow, as soon as I find what I can bolt my chains onto I will remove the enging / tranny and get back to all you helpful people.

Tranny out. Taking it into town Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes. Might as well replace my clutch.

Good idea! Because it's so much work to get to the clutch, my policy is to replace the clutch disk, replace the throw out bearing and make sure the pressure plate isn't cracked and in good order. Check the pilot bearing and I also Check the front transmission seal. PJ
