MGB slim pickings

ok I've done the discs on my mgb, but in removing the hub i destroyed a shim. why are there shims? as a group engineers are not frivolous and putting them in for fun. and how do i figure out which ones i need to stick in.

MGB hubs are designed to be torqued to a specific value. Not like many other cars where you tighten the hub until it "feels right". The design is such that shims give the proper distancing to torque the nut without damaging the bearings. That's the short answer.
