Slanted steering wheel on 76 Midget

There was a thread a while ago about a slanted steering wheel. I have that issue on my car, but I am not sure its the same problem. My steering wheel is not perpendicular to the front/back plane of the car. It is canted about 3/4" to the left.

I discussed this with the local MG mechanics, along with a printout from the previous thread which discussed one sided camber adjustment and the effect that would have on the steering post, etc.

He told me that this is how all of these MG MIdgets were built and centering the tie rods would not change this angled steering wheel issue.

I'm still not sure I believe him, and would appreciate hearing from some of the experts on this forum who know about this.

Thanks
Al

Guess he did not want the work.

Uhh, actually mine is the exact same way. At first I thought it was due to an accident, but I can't see any other evidence (and I've basically ruled out the accident).

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "slanted"...do you mean the steering wheel spokes aren't straight? Or do you mean the entire wheel itself is slanted?

If the first, my '76 Midget doesn't have that problem....& it definitely doesn't have the second!

Al, if you mean that the steering column is angled to the left, instead of being perpendicular to the dash, it's exactly as it should be. To get the necessary clearance around the engine on left hand drive cars, it had to be positioned like this. It's a carry over from the A series cars, where carbs and exhaust are on the left. I don't know if the RH drive 1500's had the same issue or not, but it's perfectly normal.

Oh, the column alignment!

ya know,, i never noticed that, i just looked at two to be sure, Pretty good angle on it when ya look down thru the windshield, and try to line it up with the drivers seat. hmmm

Mine is the same way. Called University Motors and they told me it's a design quirk for the reason above. It felt strange at first but you get used to it.

Well, I guess its pretty clear... the mechanic was right and I will just have to get over it... It is one of those things that bug me.... Sigh!!!!

Thanks for all the input

Qurk, shoot. That's one of the things that makes a Bugeye a Bugeye. It is to be savored and revered as it is not the same as others. LOL
