Sill Repair

Bad news...
I found rust in the sill of my 73'B.(Drivers side)Its rusted from the wheel well back about 18". Is there any recommendation on repair for this. Will I have to pretty much open up the whole rocker to repair this, or can I come in from the back and just work with whats rusted out from there.
Passenger side seems fine. Matter of fact, what rust I had, was always on the drivers side. Anyways, any help on this problem will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Newkie, Yes you can go in fromt the inside. I suggest you get a good grinding blade and go to it. Once you have removed the inner sill, contort yourself to see what lurks in the rest of the sill. (I've replaced both sides, rocker and sills). If you do fine a large amount of rust, you have a desision to make. I do have bad news for you. It's like cockroaches, you see only one, but there are more. I would venture to say your other sill has rust also. To check you will need to cut a 2 - 3 inch hole in the front of the rocker. (at the rear of your front wheel well) This should allow you to see both sides of the castle rail. I'm sorry this has happened. When I opened mine up, oh my. I've had to replace 60 percent of my metal due to rust. LOL,LOL /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Yuck. Have you opened up the splash panel and looked behind? B is right, rust damage can be like an iceberg. I had to replace both my sills too.

Not yet, but I will take your guys' advice and see what I have there.
Thanks, and if any others out there have anything more to ad, or horror stories of themselves, would love to learn more.

Thanks

Newkie, I'd be happy to relay any of my stories if you wish. Here is what I have replaced on my 70' B. Both rocker panels (complete)John M. knows what I mean, hey John, both floor pans, Both lower rear fenders (from seam down), both front fenders and hood. Of course these are only body parts. If you don't have a good grinder, get one and plenty of cutting blades, a sawsall, again with a good supply of blades. Ain't it wonderful? You can either post or e-mail. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

lol! I'm just glad it's behind me. I replaced both complete sills, inners, outer and all in between! Sill repair gets you a big notch in your MG belt!

You guys have me looking forward to getting out the old saw.
Sounds like I need a notch on my belt finally anyways.
I certainly have them on the bedpost.
