The fellow went into a pet store to buy a pet to provide some company since he lived alone and was lonely.
He looked at dogs, cats, and other animals. Finally he saw a parrot. While he was looking at it the storeowner came over and they were talking about how nice it would be to have the parrot for a pet and how it would learn to talk. The fellow thought about it and decided the bird might be the perfect pet for him and provide some conversation so he would not feel so lonely.
Well, the fellow bought the bird and a cage and everything else the storeowner recommended. He was told how to care for the bird and when he asked when it might start talking he was told the bird should start in a couple of weeks. So he loaded his bird and all the supplies in his car and went home.
Time went by and the fellow talked to the bird constantly. Days turned into a week and then a couple of weeks and the bird was still silent.
Finally the guy went back to the pet shop and was told that the bird needed a certain birdseed and he would start talking. So the guy bought some and went home. Time went by and his bird remained silent. So he went back to the pet store and indicated he was not very happy with his parrot. The storeowner asked several questions and it was decided the bird was lonely so he recommended a mirror in the cage. The guy purchased the mirror and went back home with renewed confidence that the parrot would start talking.
Well, this went on and the guy made several more trips and his bird remained silent. Finally the guy went in and angrily told the storeowner that he wanted to return the parrot. The storeowner calmed him down and explained that the beaks on parrots continually grow and that must be what is making it impossible for the bird to talk. The fellow merely needed to go home and file the parrot’s beak. The fellow was nervous about this but the storeowner explained how to do it and the guy finally felt he could do it. Besides the storeowner assured him that then the parrot would surely talk.
The next day the guy went back to return the cage and supplies and the storeowner asked him why he was returning these things. The guy replied that the parrot had died. This caused the storeowner to remark that filing the bird’s beak should cause no harm. The fellow said he was sure it did not hurt the bird either. The storeowner then asked what happened and the guy replied he was not sure but the parrot was dead when he removed his head from the vise.
