Side Shift Transmission up-date
I pulled the transmission a couple weeks ago due to it locking between gears and also it has been difficult to upshift into second gear without a slight grind and even more difficult to downshift from 3rd to 2nd unless traveling at a very low speed. I've put 1200 miles on the car since the restoration ( it was parked in 1974) The only thing I didn't really give any attention to in the restoration was the gearbox. Here is what I found and corrected,
The locking balls that rest between the middle shift rod and the top and bottem rods where located in the wrong place (they where riding on top of the 3rd and 4th gear rod and allowing the rods to shift or atempt to shift into two gears causing it to lock.
The 2nd gear striking fork was badly worn. Bill Bolton provided a good used part to cure that problem.
And the oddest thing was when I went to inspect the 2nd gear syncronizer baulking ring I discovered that it wasn't there as left out either intentionally or by mistake.
I took it for a ride last night and it felt like a different car, It's shifting very nice now. I gotta say I was a little intimidated when I first pulled the thing apart and I told my wife I was going to probably have to send it to Toledo so Randy could put it back together but actually it wasn't to bad after Randy sent me some great pictures and provided some answers, so thanks Randy for the help and encouragment.
