Side-Change Gearbox Stuck in Top Gear

IMG_0210.JPGHere is the latest in the saga.
Today I took the side cover off the gear box to have a look inside. I admit I haven't the faintest idea what I am looking at. Sitting at the bottom of the cover, all on it own and clearly not where it should be, was a small light gauge spring about perhaps 1/2 an inch long. I have no idea where this came from and I couldn't see anything in the parts book and workshop manual.
The three springs one above the other up the top left side of the gearbox were intact and the balls were all there in place. I removed these with a magnet.
On top of the gear box there is a small plug underneath are two balls. I remove the plug but there were no balls there. I think that one of these missing balls must one I found in the oil when I drained it. The other is stuck in the gear which you can see in the picture. it is the shiny round thing. It spins in place but doesn't want to come out.
I am wondering what the next step should be.
If the ball could be removed from where it is, would that fix the problem.
Or is it a gearbox out and dismantle job??

Any ideas and suggestions welcome, but no need to mention prozac.

OMG, 3rd time I've posted this picture. The 3rd/4th synchromesh hub came apart. As predicted.

The trans has to come out. The trans has to come apart. The reason it came apart__a couple of potential reasons__HAS to be corrected before it is put back together.

These:

Go inside this:

And are kept captive by this:

Now you see them:

Now you don't!

Yes, please read Randy's posts. Your problem is with the synchro hub, and your gearbox has to come out for a rebuild. Forget about the two balls for the interlock. Those are not accessible until the shifter rods are removed. The plug on top of the box is simply to close the hole when the box was machined.

Right, out it comes. I was dreading this task but it it inevitable.
My grateful thanks for the advice and suggestions form Forum Members.
