Local TV stations didn't ~bother~ to cover it! Idiots.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif We really have become complacent about space travel, haven't we? Guess that's inevitable, but sad, still.

It's nothing new. The first glide-tests of the shuttle were televised. I was in elementary school at the time, and asked the teachers if we could watch it. You would have thought I'd asked if we could have mud wrestling in the cafeteria. The interest in the subsequent launches was just as bad - at that time I was a licensed ham radio operator, and a local VHF repeater group was rebroadcasting all the shuttle communications. I wanted to listen to it... again, not only was there no interest shown by the teachers, but I was threatened with disciplinary actions for having my radio with me.
With that in mind, it's always nice to see how many people around here are really enthusiastic about every launch - even the unmanned launches. I'm sure part of it is just the spectacle of seeing a rocket light up the sky, but last night the crowd along the beachside road, the beach, and in front of the buildings erupted into applause and cheers when the shuttle launched. Kind of nice really.
