Shunt type Ammeter Source?

Country flag
Offline
I'm planning on converting polarity and installing an alternator. As part of upgrading the electrics I want to install an ammeter too.

I'm a lttle reluctant to bring the power cabling into the car interior and would prefer to use a shunt type ammeter. I haven't been able to identify a source for one.

Does anyone know where these may be obtained? Preferably in the UK.

TIA

James

James: I understand your reluctance to rewire your car to install an ammeter. It would be just as useful to use a voltmeter instead. These are readily available from any automotive supply source and require no rewiring or even much in the way of additional wiring. The information relayed by the voltmeter is almost as useful as the ammeter even if the source is not as direct as an ammeter might be. AL Bradley

I 2nd the voltmeter.

It is obvious when when the car is running/charging (13.8 VDC, plus or minus) and when only the key is on (12.* VDC, give or take). So you'd be able to tell at a glance if you were charging or discharging the battery.

I know of plenty of industrial amp meters that use a shunt (welding machines come immediately to mind). You might do a search for Simpson Instruments for a shunt.

James, you might consider a nice, Smith's Classic style volt meter for your dash. New Smiths ammeters are also available. They both cost about $50 + shipping from a number of sources. Just do a google search for "Smiths instruments". They also pop up frequently on Ebay.

I recently installed a volt meter in my Triumph and love it.

Let us know what you decide, good luck.
