Shroud installation

What do ya'll use between the shroud and the top of the firewall? I rememember some kind of chaulk or seam glue that I long since blasted or chiped off. Do I lay a bead of ?????? the entire length of the firewall? Is this to keep the shroud from ratteling /keep fumes out of cockpit? Please advise. Thanks BR1
 
HI BD1, I can not tell you what the product was that I used. There are many products available to you now.However, it is imperative that the shroud be affixed to the scuttle using an adhesive. Further, to prevent the three screws in the drain channel at the front of the shroud from augering out due to vibration the same adhesive should be used here. Additionally, the extreme left and right sides of the shroud to scuttle joint facing the engine compartment must be completely filled and sealed.Your justifications for doing this are correct.---Fwiw-Keoke
 
Hellos BR1. If you haven't done it already I'd use "dum dum" which can be bought at any auto paint store. It seals good and is easy to install. It comes in strips of varying thicknesses. I wouldn't use any type of adhesive because you just may want to remove the shroud again sometime. I've heard of people using roof cement which really looks just like what was used at the factory. However, as I said, you may want to remove the shroud sometime later on.

Keoke- Are you saying that the shroud should be bonded to the chasis? I am a ways from this point, but I had planned to us the type of foam strip that you might use to seal a pick up camper to a truck bed. It only has adhesive on one side. I know the stuff that was on there was stuck to both pieces but I assumed that it had just melted over time.
 
Yes Richard, the shroud was fixed to the scuttle with an adhesive.In some cases, over time, it hardened and separated the two pieces. In other cases a light torchng is required to separate the shroud from the scuttle. Your tape method is inadequate for this interface. Sealing the engine compartment off from the cockpit is the desired end result here.---Keoke

Thanks Keoke,I hadn't thought about the screws augering the holes. Looks like she experienced some of that already. I'll put that tip to use. BR1 Oh and the second welder I took the shroud to did a very good job. I am pleased.
