Shoulder Belts

I have a set of retractable ones from British Car Specialists. When I got them they came in black, which matches my interior. They have other colors now. They work well for me, although new passengers take a while to find the buckle.

Jeff,

I had the same problem as I wanted navy belts to match my interior. To "correctly" mount the belts using the factory mounting points, you'll need some special ends for the belts:

The mount outlined in red attaches to the shoulder portion of the belt and is bolted to the two mounting bolts that you will find on the interior panel that covers the rear wheelarch. The mount outlined in yellow attaches to the floor between the seat and inner sill. There are mounting points already placed in the floor and covered by rubber plugs. The third point of the belt mounts to the driveshaft tunnel. There should be rubber plugs visible from underneath the car that you can pop out and insert the proper bolts.

Here's a link to John Sim's excellent site (bookmark it, you'll want to go back there in the future for tons of useful Healey stuff) that shows how the mounting points go: https://www.healey6.com/bulletins/Seat%20Belt-ASJ.pdf

You can source the floor mounting fixtures and rear inner arch fixtures from David Nock at British Car Specialists: https://www.britishcarspecialists.com/

You may wish to check if David can have a set of belts made up to your color specifications.

I bought my belts from https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/ They are the online site for Beams seatbelts that were the original suppliers for the belts that were installed by BMC dealers in the U.S. They will happily make up a set of belts to your specification using the mounts you supply. I've worked with Steve Pekrul who has been extremely helpful and responsive:

Turnaround time is about 2 weeks.

If you decide to go this route, shoot me a pm as I have all the webbing lengths you'll need to provide.

Wow! I'm overwhelmed. This forum and you guys are just amazing! Thank you SO much!

Now I can protect my face and chest in the event of a non-rollover crash and still not offend my aesthetic sense! I didn't know I could have it both ways but am gratified to find out that I can!

(Sorry for all the exclamation points but I'm really psyched)

OK, now you're getting carried away. Take a look at the steering column, aka "the javelin" I don't care how well you're strapped in, in a front-end collision it's going to stab you in the heart. In the words of Ricky Gervais, Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee "It's a deathtrap"

Yeah, I got carried away. I spent several hours today driving Vermont country roads with the top down and think I fried my brain a little. Maybe I need to wear a breast plate and a helmet.

This is getting bizarre: I've spoken with both Seatbelt Planet (Steve Perkul, who is very helpful) and to British Car Specialists and it seems that neither of them make a ready-to-install 3-point non-retractable seatbelt. Seatbelt Planet's belts don't have the correct end pieces nor do they have the mounting hardware for the shoulder belt. British Car Specialists can get the belts made up for me in my color choice and they can sell me the mounting hardware for the shoulder belt but their end fitting on the shoulder portion won't fit onto their mount! I have to send out the belt to have that end fitting changed. How bizarre is that? My head is spinning at this point.

Yep, bought the shoulder mounting hardware from British Car Specialists and will get the belts made up by Seatbelt Planet. Strange the hoops we have to jump through in order to get 3-point seatbelts in colors other than black.

Just installed the belts as best I could. Problems were the bolts for the shoulder mount are very short so was lucky to just get the belt hardware bolted on but without any washers. Simply too short for washers but once I got the nuts started I could tighten them down well so it's secure, albeit sans lock washers.

The passenger side was easy but the car isn't 100% bilaterally symmetrical so removing the pin (axle, not cotter pin) on the driver's door sill was a bitch and getting it back in was even harder but I managed to get it done.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice and for sending me to British Car Specialists and Seatbelt Planet!

google "quick Fit" in the UK. I needed a special color and chrome period correct hardware. They delivered, but they were slow. Price...OUCH!!

Does anyone have an opinion on the Moss 3 point belts? It looks like they adjust at the bottom rather than the top. I don't need custom hardware or colours. I'm trying to decide between the Moss belts and the Seatbelt Planet belts.

I use Moss detachable three point belts. When using the tonneau cover, they detach to go through the flap in the cover. I like them a lot. They adjust for length at the top at the wheel well. once set they never need to be adjusted again. Tightens near the gear box to secure people.

Thanks for the info. Andrea, I see you're from Trieste. I drove past there last year on my way to Ljubliana. Beautiful part of the world.

Lubiana, With your Healey??!!
But I am sure (I was in Vancouver some years ago) Vancouver is better,(NOT in winter)
Some more info regards the belts : SECURON are EU homologated for road use, but I don't know if also in CANADA, not easy to wear, but comfortable in driving, I am very satisfied by the security of my passenger, BUT regard the driver seat, the steering column are so incumbent- NO FRONT CRASH please !-
