Should my nipples be covered?

Hi All,
I’m having a small operation on my hand tomorrow so I’m looking for easy jobs on my Healey as I recoup. On my new fuel pump there are 2 nipples that I think are vents (see circled items in photo). What gets connected to them? If I remember correctly, my original pump had only one nipple and that had a rubber cap on it. As usual, the part came sans instructions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hello Greg,
that is a vent and should not be sealed off.
You can, if you like, run some tubing down to near ground level so that in the event of a rupture of the diaphragm (very rare), fuel will not leak into the engine compartment (or wherever the pump is located).

Some of the later pumps with points, such as the AZX13xx series, have what appears to be a cap on the vent near the power connection. This cap actually contains a ball check valve which is designed to move air in at the bottom end vent & out at the cap vent. I can only speculate that it may be intended to vent the points, maybe to prevent the accumulation of ionized air created by the very small point arcing in a confined space. Or maybe for cooling? In any case, the pump does suck air in through the diaphragm end vent & this vent should probably arranged to pick up air from a fairly clean location.

Hi Greg, Best thing to do is just let them alone they will not cause you any problem. If you have the little check valve off the old pump Dave mentioned you can reinstall it on this one, otherwise its ok as is.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
