TR2/3/3A Should I put flat washers on sump bolts?

In Roger Williams book on how to Restore TR2/3/3A he suggests putting a flat washer on each sump bolt against the sump and then the normal lock washer and bolt. Is this a good idea? Will it affect the torque setting, which the manual calls for 20 lbs? He doesn't say why, but maybe he believes this might keep the sump holes from cupping. Thanks!

Bob, the larger flat surface will keep the thin metal straighter between bolts, thus a better seal. The torque would still apply the same to the threads, which is what's really going on with torque.

I'd say the washers are worth a try - especially if you have gone to the trouble to flatten out the dimples using found around each hole.

Are you sure about that torque? Been awhile since I last did this but I recall a much lower number.

Edit: Nevermind - I see the Haynes manual says 16-18 lbs, I was thinking more like 10-12. So much for my memory.
 
I just went and checked my My TR4 manual and it shows 18 to 20 lbs. Roger Williams noted 20 lbs in his Restore book when he mentioned using flat washers.
