Should Fans Turn on When AC is on? 1995 VPD

My cooling fan (2 of them at the Radiator) does not come on when I first start the engine (while the engine is cold) when I have the AC on so no air flows through the AC "radiator" (maybe it's called a condensor) and so, there's not cold air in the cabin.

The Fan does come on once the engine heats up and from then on, even sitting in traffic, the AC blows cold.

Seems to me that the fans should be told to turn on by a switch or relay (or artificial intelligence) whenever the AC is on, independent of the engine temp.

Do you know what might need replaces, or is there some control box that isn't telling the fans to turn on when the AC is turned on?

Thanks for your help,
Bob

Bob,

I'm not familiar with the way the 1995 radiator fans work, but in previous years, they come on when the radiator coolant reaches a certain preset temperature, via a Thermal Switch and Relay.

some of us have modified our XJ-6 (mine is a 1984) to run the auxiliary/electric fan whenever the a/c compressor is turned on.
This works fine in summer for the obvious reason, but in winter, you want the opposite, you want the car to warm up and stay warm when using the Heater.

There are modifications available like you describe, in fact I think there is a kit already to do the above.

try the following site:

They sell kits for XJ-6 Series 3 up to 1987. You have a Series 5 XJ-6. Maybe they make one for your model year. If not, let me know and I can refer you to another site.

Ex is right. The system is thermostatically controlled by the A/C ECM. When the temp is right and the A/C on they'll come on. They will not come on cold as the system needs a warm up. It would be useless to by-pass to come on on a cold engine. Have you had a system check recently to see if the A/C pressures are up to snuff and has the coolant been changed in 4 year intervals as recommended?
