Shinny Brass top radiator

Tearing down a 1950 Triumph Mayflower and as parts come off they get restored so by the time the body is done everything is ready to go back on. As the rad came off, it was taken apart to replace the core and I noticed shinny metal beneath the old black paint on the rad tank top. So after a quick strip some spit and polish and wow, its like a military belt buckle, shinny enough to see your face, looks sharp with all new black paint around it. Now if only the rest of the car will come out as successful. Just neet to know what these old gals were made of.

Cheers

The tanks are probably copper or possibly brass. They were painted for protection and to prevent the ugly look of tarnished metal.

All radiators and heater cores were done this way until the advent of aluminum in the late 80's.

When I pulled the HD 454 out of my Chevy pickup for rebuild in 1980, I had the radiator tanked and cleaned. It was huge and it gleamed after the cleaning. I had more offers to buy that than the engine.

I would love to post some pics but I cannot figure out how to download them into the forum. I need real simple language to explain moving them over to a ULR or something.
Confused.

That's probably why we can't see your aviatar.

I put all my pictures (except a few) on photobucket.com. It's free. Just sign up and upload your pictures. Then I copy the "direct link" and paste it right in the reply box like this

Or in the Full Reply Screen, you can push the 3rd square button, paste the link in the box and get this
DragonBall-Z_TR4-A_Wallpaper-small.jpg

(It's really the same thing but it has square brackets with "img" inside
, before and after the link)
There are other methods, but that's what I use.
