TR2/3/3A Shifting back from Reverse to First...

When I do this the gear lever seems to have trouble getting into the mid position so that I can move it left to go into first. Anyone know whats going on in the gearbox top cover to cause this. I'm having a brain fart here...is the gear lever supposed to be lifted up slightly when engaging reverse?

You have to lift the lever ever so little to get the gear stick to go from neutral into reverse. After 58 years of doing this, you won't even notice.

To get it to go into reverse or into first more easily, slip it into the 2nd gear gate for a second with the clutch to the floor and then quickly into 1st or into reverse.

This saves all the grinding noises you now hear. What this does is "sort-of" synchronise the gears when you are about to put it into gear to move from a dead stop.

However, you shouldn't need to lift up when moving the lever back to the left, to engage 1st gear. Might be worth having a look under the shift lever, as that was the first thing I noticed when the 3-4 selector starting coming loose from the end of the shaft. That was a lotta years ago, but as I recall, the 3-4 selector is just a press fit into the end, rather than being pinned as the reverse and 1-2 selectors are. It's not even listed as a separate part in the SPC.

The 3-4 selector is pinned, at least on the TR6 transmissions.
