i assume that it is to ingage reverse but i couldnt tell what it did. its on a 66ish spitfire and was wondering if the transmission is a dirrect swap with the 69 im working on? i am familure with german cars that you push down to engage reverse but not sure on the lift thing.

Nah.
They're telling you there IS no reverse.
You and your co-rider step out of the car, LIFT the CAR at both ends, rotate the car, and then you just drive away.

Easy.
 
Dunno about Spits, but on the TR2-6 you are supposed to have to lift on the knob to select the reverse rail.

I don't think that there's any difference between a Mk2 and a Mk3 transmission. Should be the same non-synchro first transmission.

My wife had a 1968 Mk3. Trying to recall where reverse was on it but wasn't it opposite of the TR to engage reverse - left and forward?

Right, Scott. On the various "SC" gearboxes, it's a bit of a push DOWN, then to the left and forward -- that for the familiar "remote" shift extension setup. On some Standard 8s and Standard/Triumph 10s, it was a bit of a LIFT UP, then to the left and forward!

The "Marina" single-rail box in late Spitfires was very different in shift pattern, with reverse over to the right!
 
thanks guys

ill be going back out to the car soon and ill take a few pics of the car, also this same guy is parting out some mg midgets from the 70s as well as a few healys and a has what he says is a rare V8 diamler roadster all fiberglass. i was so in shock with all the english cars that i couldnt take it all in. he had several jags from the 50s and 60s as well as some others i cant remember, i will ask if i can take a few pics of his yards he has 3 yards full of strange and unusual stuff like one that comes to mind is a giant red double decker bus from over seas somewhere.
