Hi guys, It's been awhile. Every once in awhile when shifting I loose second gear and frequently I have no reverse. In both cases I sit there and rev. Someone suggested to me it could be worn forks because second and reverse are pretty much the same shift direction. How do I go about checking the shifter forks? How can I tell if they are worn as I have never looked at forks before? Pictures would be nice. Any info would be appreciated.
 
As you know I was following your thread on this as posted on another forum, but I have an additional thought. I still think that you are going to end up pulling the power unit to get anything done, but when you do just pull the side cover and reinstall the shift lever to the shift extension. When you have it buttoned up go through the shift sequences an observe the movement of the forks and the actual gear selection through the window. You might have to do this more than several times to make the problem appear but it should at some point. If/when it happens pull the entire shift extension house and look at the way the lever on the front end of the shift rod is engaging the three plates on the ends of the fork rails. The problem is either right there or to be found in a loose "finger" attached to the primary shift rod.

Thanks again Jack. I don't think I want to attempt that at this time being a very naive backyard mechanic. I'll probably wait until I find someone with expertise willing to help me for a few beers....
 
I know it's a pain, but I had a similar problem with a 70 I owned and I fixed it while the tranny was in the car. I drained the tranny, pulled the side cover and found that one fork was loose on the shaft. As I remember, and that's not always a good sign, I tightened a set screw and the problem went away. Not saying that this is your problem, but just throwing some other info out there. PJ
