Shift rod seal in an automatic?

This is an automatic in an E-Type, only one ever encountered with this seal leaking. Possible to do the seal R&R through the access panel? Or just tell the owner ATF and a cookie tray would be cheaper? :confused:

Seal/bushing behind selector linkage arm, in case.

HOO-BOI! Looks like a bear. But why have the access panel there if it's not possible?

For one, it appears that disconnecting the linkage from the arm will be ~fun~. Then I wonder how the arm is perhaps locked onto the shaft... And is the little block that the oil pan is bolted to molded into the case?

Time to consult Mr. Google!

Interesting. It is a Borg Warner box, the nut came off with no problem. Bracket is located on the shaft by two flats and matching flats in the bracket. No way to mis-align that. But the seal is deep in a recess in the case (that's all part of the case you see in the picture, not a separate casting). The seal removal tool looks to be the best bet... or a gallon of ATF in the boot and forget the whole seal R&R adventure. 😉

Found a good exploded view of the B-W 12, now can see what's what with seal, shaft & bracket (#89, 90, 91) . All good!
