Shift pattern layout

Well, do I feel dumb! I'm pulling the engine on this GT6, my 1st Triumph. Theres no legend on the shift knob, the cars on blocks with the plugs out, head off and the book tells me to put it in first...... Uh-huh. you guessed it. I don't know if 1st is up towards engine or back to me,so which is it? 1st on top left, or bottom left and reverse is where? right bottom or right top? I'd search the archives first as I usually do, but this has got to be a first, pun intended.
Mike

It ain't no Italian car. 1'st usually toward the go part.

yup that's what I figgered too, but the resistance as I removed the nuts on the propeller shaft was the same in either forward or back positions. I had a car once that was 1st down and second up, may have been a vw? I'll go with up as I continue to pull the engine. Tom you've got a pm.

Yeah, was the '67 Mustang a 3 speed?
Not sure about 67, but I believe 64-66 were available either way (plus an automatic). Friend of mine had a 65 with a straight 6 and three on the tree.

Weirdest thing I ever drove was a WWII era army 6x6. 1-2 was on the middle rail!

The base transmission in all Mustangs, 1964 1/2 - 1973 was a 3 speed floor mounted unit.

19 - your GT6 has a conventional 'H' pattern shifter.

I had a '67 Mustang with a four speed. I also had a '68 with a three speed. The '67 was a Hi-Po car. Four barrel carb, disc brakes, driving lights, special wheels, stiffer suspension, etc. I really liked that car.

First and reverse are remarkably close (up and to the left).

Sure seems so... My Spit 6 has reverse up-left, whereas the '79 Spit is up-right. Both have J-type overdrives, although apparently in my car this is somewhat odd as most early GT6's had D-types? I'm still trying to wrap my head around the various transmissions that came in Spits and GT6's...

Remember the old Chevrolet Powerglide 2-speed automatics? A drag racers dream.....

OD units notwithstanding, there are only two "different" gearboxes for all the Herald, Spitfire, Vitesse and GT6 cars. The original was derived from the Standard 8 three-rail gearbox and had four speeds in the normal "H" and Reverse "to the left and up towards 1st." Even in all-synchro versions, all the cars followed that same pattern. The only exception was for Spitfire from 1975 on, which adopted the corporate "Marina" single-rail gearbox as your '79 has.

Ah... good to know... In that case, I wish we had sourced an earlier box when we converted the '79 to an o/d box. Jerseygirl hates the "up-right" reverse location with a passion...

By any chance, would the trans in my car bolt up to the '79 bell housing? Just in case I act on my wish to swap a T-9 into my car...

Thanks for the clarification, been away for a few days choppin' ice and trees. Had a horrendous ice storm, power out for over a million people, still a couple hundred thousand without power.
