Shift lever boot

I want to re place the torn leather boot on my 4.2 series 1 FHC. Before I start tearing the interior apart, any advice on just how to go about this would be appreciated. Clearly I will need to remove the transmission cover/console but cannot locate any obvious things holding it in place. Help.........
Thanks
Jim

Jim,

On my 69, you have to remove the radio console, remove inner seat belts, remove center console. Flip the center console over and the boot is clipped or stapled to a vinyl/leather covered housing that is, in turn, screwed to the center console in about 4 places. While you have it apart, think about replacing the dust excluder on the handbrake.

Thanks Steve.
But what holds the center console in place? I assume there must be several fasteners of some kind but I cannot find any. I don't want to assume it is some kind of force fit and just pry it off.

Jim,

Mine was held on at the rear by the two inner seat belt bolts, at the front simply pinned down by the radio console. There's no place to hide screws, but if you have them, they would probably be up front with an upholstery trim washer on them.

I've reinstalled my console and I can tell you it does indeed get pushed into place. Remove the belts and the armrest and try gently prying the thing up, I'll bet it's the same as mine was.
