Looks to me like they just ran over a camper or two, becuase I couldn't get all that in my Jensen Healey! Maybe it was a entire Troop of Boy Scouts? Or...

Hi Dave,

Amazing what you can get into the trunk of a Healey, isn't it!

That's a picture of my car in the parking lot of the Open Roads 2002 host hotel, the Horizon Casino at Lake Tahoe, after being emptied of all it's contents. That event took place after being towed a grand total of two blocks back to the parking lot we had just left. (AAA took over an hour to locate a flatbed, but the road was uphill, otherwise we would have pushed it.) Two blocks is as far as we got the morning we were heading home before the car rolled to a dead stop - no engine, no horn, no lights, no nuthin'! It's going on two years now, and I still get that sick feeling when I think about turning the key and pushing the button or honking the horn, and...nothing...

But, the good thing about a meet as big as Tahoe is that there are all these Healey folk around, and fortunately, Lou Galper of the San Diego club didn't go on the rally with 300 other Healeys that morning. He's got a BN1, is familiar with the electrical system and traced the problem down to a loose, slightly corroded nut (the car, not the driver), even tho' I'd had my wiring harness done earlier in the year. Also, So Cal member Kirk Kvam had an RV and trailer full of tools, test equipment (and refreshments!) to make things a lot easier.

The previous picture is one happy 50-year old (once again, the car, not the driver) cruising the main drag at Lake Tahoe under the welcoming banner of Open Roads 2002.

Curious about the next two pictures?

Yes, Dave, same car, different parking lot!

This time it's in Eureka, California at the Red Lion Inn, host hotel for the 2003 Healey Rendezvous. Right before dinner time, Healey Association member Charlie Hart came up to me and told me, "There seems to be a little problem with your car." The "little problem" was a slow but steady drip forming a puddle of gasoline behind the driver's side rear tire. Once again, there were a lot of helpful Healey folk around, and the problem was eventually diagnosed by Udo Putzke of Bilstein shock absorber fame. It turned out to be a leak at the back of the tank where the gas line exits. About a half hour earlier, I had filled the gas tank to the top, (something I've never done in 20+ years of owning the car, always leaving a little room for the gas to expand), but because it had been announced that the next day's tour was going to be over 200 miles, some of it on back roads, I decided to fill it up completely, and since with the Hundreds you can look into the tank and see the gas level, I stopped right where the neck exits the tank.

As for the solution - another bit of good fortune - Roland Wilhelmy had just enough JB Weld to get the job done, so we didn't have to go hunt it down in the middle of the night or miss the next day's tour. Even though it was the middle of summer and the daylight lasts longer, it was getting pretty late - the next picture I've got is Udo mixing the JB Weld with friend Wally holding the flashlight, so he can see what he is doing!
