I read some of the posts on that web site. I think the posters are way off base. Those are cool and I bet a blast to drive. Not something you would drive to work, but what the heck!
Eldridge Park here in Elmira used to have bumper cars like that (what those ones were before they were street legal) I always wondered what happened to them. they were really cool. And fast!(for bumper cars)
Banjo, I was born and raised in Elmira, southside. Remember going to Eldridge Park way back when and the bumper cars (vaguely). Is the park still there? Now in CT
The Park still exists. They sold off all the rides, then a private group decided a few years ago they wanted to reconstruct the carousel of which all the original horses had been sold off. So they hired a company to hand carve all new animals and in 2006 it reopened with its original, but restored, drive mechanism, and in the original building. They did an excellent job. Unfortunatly, the bumper cars, the whip, the flying scooters, the teacups, haunted house, roller coaster, and all the kiddie rides are gone.
