Series 2 XJ Motor -- What's the plate on the back of the block below the head?

HI-

I recently aquired a nice '76 XJ6C, and the engine leaks a fair bit of oil... Ok, it leaks A LOT of oil. One key place that seems to leak oil is this flat plate on the back of the block below the head. It has 6 or so bolts holding it in. Question is: If I take it off to renew the gasket, what's behind it? Seems like it would be a water passage, but it must be an oil passage to the head? Is anything going to fall out if I remove it while in the car?

There's water behind the plate. The oil problem is from either the back of the head gasket, cam covers, rear cam cover caps, or oil feed banjo bolts. Re-torque the head and cam covers first. Spray everything clean back there and look carefully for the first seep.
