Seat Belts

I replaced the stock seatbelts about 2 years ago as they were well worn and a royal pain to use. I bought a replacement set from moss and while they are easier to use they still have a bad habit of locking up when you’re pulling them out to put them on. This is livable but I now have a new problem. I noticed the belt on the driver side was slightly shorter than the original belts but never checked the passenger side. It turns out that the passenger side is substantially shorter and is causing problems for my mom and other passengers that would prefer to sit more upright. Basically anyone bigger than a 12 year old or a anorexic supermodel would have issues on the passenger side.

Does anyone know the length of the stock belt for a 75 and the height of the portion that contains the latch. And does anyone know of a company that makes a good 3 point belt?

My drivers side one (original I suppose) just locked up a few days ago, and won't let go. I imagine the webbing in them probably as useless as strapping myself in with bungie cord too though.

Stewart...My 74 OE Seatbelts are 92 inches long, reel to floor bolt fully extended. I am 6'3" and fat, and mine are a little stubborn, but I have plenty of room for me, upright even.

Thanks Bruce. Do you know what the latching portion length is? I'm guessing about 18 inches or so. It's ridiculous my mom is tiny and can barely get the belt on and I'm 6'1" and fat and have no problems.

Hmmmm When you said that, I wondered if it was different for the passenger side and trudged back out to the garage (a total distance of about 30 feet) and measured the passenger side...it is only 90 inches long. That is fully extended, with the stitching exposed from the reel. The buckle side is a bit over 12 inches from bolt to the end of the buckle.

Stewart, I had the identical problem with the Moss belts I installed in one of the Sprites. Too short! They aren't the retractable belts though.

A friend of mine at the LAMGA bought some generic ones off ebay and they worked perfectly. They were brand new and good quality. Also, they're retractable.

Stewart, I balked at the price of new OEM retracto belts and fished around until I found a good set of belts out of a, please pardon me, Miata. I am presently (slowly) re-engineering them to fit in my roadster and will post the info when I am done. $30 for a full set of two was about in my price range. As to the "sticking" and "locking up" of the OEM units I believe that if you take them out and just spend a few minutes looking at them you will find that they are not rocket science and that a repair/service/fix can be done with some ease. I didn't do that in the roadster because mine were not the retracto type in the first place and I didn't want to strip out the ones in the GT just yet. Jack
