Seat Back Angle

Hi Guys,

Just wondering how many of you guys are happy with the seating position on the big Healeys?
To me, the seats were too upright and stiff. There was no way I could relax while I was driving, so after many years of thought and experimentation I came up with the attached modifications. With the addition of a small foam cushion, the car feels just like a race car when I sit in it. No kidding.

1. Notice the slight difference in the first photo of how the back is reclined. Green car is OEM.
2. Another member sent me a pic of the OEM seating position so I superimposed it over my new angle.
3. & 4. Shows the adjustments that need to be made.
5. New angle for the seat back
6. Small foam cushion to fill that gap where the back meets the bottom makes a lot of difference in comfort.

You need only a used set of bottom seat frames if you want to try this out. Chrome-plated domed head bolts, fender washers and acorn nuts from the Bolt Depot finish off the installation.

Bouna fortuna,
Peter Carbone

Peter, I made a similar modification to my seat backs about 35 years ago and it has been a real blessing. Can’t imagine what driving that many years would feel like with vertical seat back…

Thanks for posting this here Peter. This is a very well thought out and useful solution -

especially as the Healey owners age out. My highly evolved BN1 is fitted with Mazda Miata MX 5 seats which are wider than my Healey seats so I cannot raise or lower the top unless I fold the seats forward and they will not go far enough back when the top is down as the top irons want to take the same space as the seat backs. I have a pair of seat bottoms and 100S stylr backs from Kilmartin should I decide to replace the Miata/MX5 seats. This conversion to the stock seat back angle will be just the ticket….

My big Healey seats are performance specific, comfort is not necessarily paramount for the goal in vintage racing.
