I'm in the process of putting my car back together after a paint job. I have various new seals (boot, bonnet, doors, etc.) to replace the old ratty ones I removed. Do these seals require adhesive and if so what is a good adhesive?
I think would save the 3M Super for seals with a lot of stress on them door/trunk seals, etc. Only because it is so tough to remove. If you could get some, Nissan uses an outstanding sealer/contact cement between the plastic dust cover and the door sheet metal under the door panels. They must use it elsewhere too. It was like freshly tacky after ten years (replacing a window regulator). Still worked upon reassembly.

Hi TEL,
You might be surprised at how well "3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner" #08949 Works to remove old cured adhesive. Even the "super Adhesive". It softens & removes old cured adhesive without damage to the underlying cured paint. The first place I used it was to remove the seal on an AH boot channel where it had been installed in the boot lid shroud channel instead on the proper boot lid flange. There was no trace of adhesive or paint damage to the channel where it was removed. The paint was still even glossy.
The second place I used it was to remove the inside carpet padding which had been glued to the floors & transmission tunnel. The padding was removed, underlying surface wiped down, & two layers of Dynamat Xtreme fitted & tightly rolled dow over the cleaned inside floor surfaces. The very sticky Butyl rubber backing of the Dynamat assures that no moisture will get betweent it & the metal to cause future rust. The top aluminum surface of the Dynamat was painted proper body color. A loosely layed section of 1/4" thick closed cell foam was placed under the carpets for easily removal. The carpet & foam was secured with a few invisible carpet snaps. Makes for a much cooler interior. See the attached pic.
