Hi there, and welcome to the forum! The '79 Midget was never going to break any 0-60 records, so that is no indication of the quality of the set-up. It is possible that it is misaligned by a tooth, but since it seems to run fine, then maybe it really is okay.

Hello all...just joined and thought i would introduce myself.
i have been working on my 79 midget for about 4 years, last year she made it to the road (pics soon). i live in vermont and wonder if you folks ever get together near New England?.

but while your all here i have a question about timing, i timed my motor with a new cam using a degree wheel...doubel checked my self bout ten times, she runs fine but the timing mark on the pulley is not on the scale, did i miss by a tooth maybe?..car runs fine....no spitting or chugging , seems under powered but it aint a very big engine....any thoughts?...thanx for your time...

Actually, we are talking about 2 different things here!! The cam is for valve timing in conjuction to where the piston is!! If you miss a tooth, it is serious!! I doubt that you did!! The other is timing of when the spark is fired!! It is more likely that you have the wrong crank puley on or something like that! I would pull the #1 piston up to TDC on the compression stroke, and see where the timing mark is sitting! GOOD LUCK!!!

maybe some of you good folks missed this post.

hello! and if your harmonic balancer has a rubber insert, it may have failed and misaligned your timing marks. for people in your neck of the woods check out the MG List at Tony Barnhill's site The Autoist
