Saving money at the pump.

Here's a great trick for making your gas cost $1.00/gallon less at the pump! Kroger food stores (e.g. Fry's, Fred Meyers, etc) give you points towards fuel savings when you shop there. The lesser known fact is that they often offer double and quadruple points for gift card purchases. My wife and I, armed with this knowledge, have made a list of all the places we frequently shop (Petsmart, Autozone, Home Depot, Starbucks etc) and instead of spending our money directly at those stores we buy gift cards from Fry's and use those. Thanks to this minor modification to the way we buy things we only pay $2.30 a gallon! And believe me, when filling up the Explorer and F-150 that amounts to a serious savings in the range of $20 to $25 dollars a tank!

Nice!! that'll work 'til more people figure it out, and they change the rules.
Until then, nice use of the system!

How does buying something from Home Depot earn you points at the grocery? Winn Dixie does it here, so I'd like to figure this out.

When are the points double and quadruple?

It's not the shopping at Home Depot as much as it is buying the gift card from the super market. I just happen to shop at Home Depot a lot, which is why we get their gift cards.

As to the double/quadruple points - we've not figured out their exact schedule yet. They are always double points, as to quadruple points they are every couple months. The wife says that the quadruple offerings preceed a spending time in the calendar (Christmas, back to school, etc).

Our local market, Giant Foods, often adds points for special purchases, so Thursday I had $1.50 off per gallon. But it is a once and done deal, and the points for the last period expire today. Back to regular price for my next fill-up.

I was curious so I checked the terms of the gas program (also at Giant Foods... same as Dave) and it looks like they EXCLUDE gift cards from accumulating points.
There are no Kroger stores around here :cryin:

That's very interesting. There are many items on that list that qualify for points for us. I'm willing to bet they have to adjust the programs on a state by state basis due to local laws.

So, PA is out. The entire western seaboard + arizona are ok.

The first thing that caught my eye was that they exclude milk from earning points.... what's that about!
Glad it works in your neck of the woods Jody.

It works well for me in MA with Stop and Shop. Sixty cents per gallon is my average on a 18 gallon tank in my Explorer every couple weeks pays for another toy for either LBC.
